For the most part, powered speakers are being ampliphied with some extra power to push the distance and range of the sound produced. And when you get beyond the smaller computer models, they can get quite pricey. Typical prices for 30 inches and above can go well beyond $300 a pair. And the large models go well beyond that but are intended more for commercial applications and heavy usage. Location Issues: You have another cord to worry about and a necessary outlet close by the speakers. Moving these big boys around can get to be fun too since they often weigh much more than the un-powered models. The age old problem of cranking them up so that a good size area can be properly covered adds to the wear and tear too. Wiring And Connectors: The type of metal used for both the connections and the wire is important on any speaker's quality of output. But with the bigger commercial models it can be much more noticable due to the higher quality output. Larger units cover larger areas and will require longer cables of all types, and that means more expensive. Warranties: Powered stereo speakers guarantees are important when you start spending the big bucks. Always read the fine print for any exclusions and make sure that dealer and manufacturer stand behind any warranties. |
