Replacement Stereo SpeakersReplacement stereo speakers can offer some challenges if you want the same exact size and shape. And it can get real exciting depending on the style and size. OK, your current speakers have either gone to speaker heaven or you just want to improve the sound quality. Finding just the right replacement stereo speakers is easy if you don't have to worry about holes in your walls or limited space. If you have no size or location requirements, then it comes down to budget and quality. Keeping the same enclosure makes it tough since many are permanently sealed due to the design. And if you try and open you lose the air tight enclosure feature. If it's a current model and available, just get the entire unit and don't try it the hard way. If the model is no longer available you might be able to find a used replacement on eBay or resale shops. The path of least resistant on replacement stereo speakers is to go with a new model that fits your budget and gives you as good or better sound. Chances are good you can find a better speaker for less money due to advancements in technology and materials. Replacing Components: If you have your current speakers installed in the wall or built into wall units you can possibly replace the actual speakers within the enclosure. But it does get pretty technical on areas such as power, wattage, frequency response, sensitivity, and impedance. If you understand all that stuff or know someone that does, it may not be that big of deal. But if you don't, it might be a better choice to go with replacing the entire speaker. New Models Are Better: In some items, older is better due to construction and quality. Depending on how old your original speakers are, chance are very good that the newer models offer much better quality and at a lower price. When I replaced a pair of 25 year old speakers last year I was amazed at the difference in quality with the new versions. Technology has come a long ways and if you have some really old speakers you will definitely see an improvement in quality of sound for less money too. Warranties: Many of the newer high end stereo speakers have a lifetime warranty. That's about as good as it gets. Always read the entire warranty just in case. Some can give everything and then taketh away in the small print. Some stores also offer extended warranties above and beyond the manufacturers. Unless you see something offered that improves the manufacturer's warranty I would pass but it's always a good idea to look. |
